The First Funeral Co-operative in Newfoundland & Labrador
Bringing together Green’s Funeral Home and Noel’s Funeral Home, the co-operative will have four service points located in Winterton, Carbonear, Harbour Grace and Western Bay. Since 2021, Noel’s
Funeral Home has been owned by a network of funeral co-operatives in Canada with the goal of converting it into a co-operative. For the project
to be successful, the network wanted to acquire another funeral home, which came to fruition with the acquisition of Green’s Funeral Home.
Co-operatives are a unique model whereby the organization is democratically-owned and operated by its members. A funeral co-operative aims to meet the needs of its members by offering the same services as a traditional funeral business, except that it is owned by its members, which ensures local control.

Two Family Businesses
Green’s has been in business for generations to serve the residents of Lower Trinity Bay South, from its location in Winterton. By joining forces with Noel’s Funeral Home, which organizes approximately 150 funerals, Green’s will be able
to continue to offer its services with the same human warmth that has made its reputation. The Noel family connection with the funeral industry in Newfoundland and Labrador dates back to September 1930, when William C. Noel, along
with his son Jonathan, established a carpentry business specializing in casket making, and later expanded into the funeral business with a horse-drawn hearse. Little by little, the two organizations will work together to develop common services, but this synergy is not intended to reduce jobs.
The transaction also provides that all pre-arranged agreements will be respected.
