The First Funeral Co-operative in Newfoundland & Labrador
Sunrise Funeral Co-operative has been officially incorporated on June 21, 2024.
Co-operatives are a unique model whereby the organization is democratically owned and operated by its members. A funeral co-operative aims to meet the needs of its members by offering the same services as a traditional funeral business, except that it is owned by its members, which ensures local control.
Sunrise Funeral Co-operative was created with the goal of purchasing Noel's Funeral Homes and Green's Funeral Home, and converting both businesses into a not-for-profit, community-owned, and locally governed funeral community service co-operative.
At the moment, Sunrise Funeral Co-operative does not provide funeral services to the public, but it is already affiliated with Noel's Funeral Homes in Carbonear, Harbour Grace, and Western Bay, as well as Green's Funeral Home in Winterton. Services are available in Trinity and Conception Bay through these funeral homes.

Two Family Businesses
Green’s has been in business for generations to serve the residents of Lower Trinity Bay South, from its location in Winterton. By joining forces with Noel’s Funeral Homes, which organizes approximately 150 funerals, Green’s will be able to continue to offer its services with the same human warmth that has made its reputation.
The Noel family connection with the funeral industry in Newfoundland and Labrador dates back to September 1930, when William C. Noel, along with his son Jonathan, established a carpentry business specializing in casket making, and later expanded into the funeral business with a horse-drawn hearse.
